How to choose a web designer in London

You are not buying a moodboard. You are buying a process that produces a fast, findable website you actually own. Here is how London buyers can tell the difference.

Start with the outcome, not the aesthetic

A web designer plans how pages look and how people move through them. A web developer implements that plan in code. Many London “designers” only deliver Figma. Many “developers” only theme a template. The person or studio you want can show live sites, not just pictures of sites, and can explain how those sites get traffic.

Write down the job of the website in one sentence. Examples: “Book more consultations from people searching in SW1” or “Take wholesale orders without WhatsApp.” Share that sentence in every enquiry. If a designer talks only about colour, they have not heard you.

Questions that sort professionals from presenters

  1. Who writes the HTML? (If the answer is “our offshore team” ask who is accountable when Core Web Vitals fail.)
  2. What is the starting price and what is excluded?
  3. How do you handle redirects if this is a redesign?
  4. Will we own the domain, hosting, and repository?
  5. How many revision rounds are in the fee?
  6. Can we speak to a client in a similar sector?
  7. What happens after launch — is SEO a separate upsell?

How to read a London proposal

A useful proposal states pages, integrations, timeline (usually 4–8 weeks for a marketing site), payment schedule, and what “done” means. A weak proposal lists hours or “unlimited design”. Unlimited design is how projects rot.

Price bands in this city still cluster around £2,000–£8,000 for small brochure sites, £8,000–£20,000 for custom professional work, and £15,000+ for serious e-commerce. If a quote is £499, you are buying a template and a tight contract. If a quote is £40,000 for five pages, ask what research, motion and campaign work is bundled. Full numbers are in the cost breakdown.

Agency vs freelancer vs platform

  • Freelancer: good for a tight brief and a single skilled person. Risk: illness, holidays, and no SEO cover.
  • Studio / agency: overlapping skills, a producer, and a process. Risk: junior staff if you do not ask who is on the job.
  • DIY builder: fine for a stall or a test. Weak for competitive terms like “web design agency London”. See DIY vs professional.

Red flags

Guaranteed #1 rankings. No physical or video meeting. Stock copy that mentions “synergy”. No mention of GDPR, accessibility, or hosting. Reluctance to put the studio name on Companies House. Password access to your domain “for convenience” without you remaining the registrant.

A simple shortlist process

Pick three providers. Give them the same one-paragraph brief. Score them on understanding, proof, commercial terms, and chemistry. Visit a live site they built on your phone over 4G. Fill in their form — if their own conversion path is messy, yours will be too.
