WordPress is a flexible CMS. Shopify is a hosted commerce platform. A custom PHP site is often the fastest option when you mainly need a brochure and a form. Pick the tool that matches the job.
Choose Shopify if you sell products online as a core revenue line and want checkout, inventory and apps in one vendor. Choose WordPress if you publish often, need custom page types, or already have a team that knows it. Choose HTML/CSS/JS/PHP if the site is mostly marketing pages — which is most London professional-service firms.
WordPress is open-source software you host yourself (or via WP Cloud, Kinsta, etc.). You can edit pages, run a blog, and attach almost any feature via plugins. That flexibility is the risk: page builders and 40 plugins will destroy Core Web Vitals.
WordPress development in London should mean a custom, lean theme. Budget for hosting, updates, and someone who will not install “just one more plugin”. SEO can be excellent if the theme is clean. WooCommerce can sell products, but you then own security and checkout complexity that Shopify includes.
Shopify rents you a store: hosting, PCI, a decent checkout, and a theme. Monthly fees plus a transaction cut (unless you use Shopify Payments with their structure) plus apps. For Shopify website design London projects we keep apps few, because each one is a speed and privacy decision.
Shopify is weaker as a content-led SEO site unless you invest in theme sections and a proper blog/editorial pattern. It is the right default for a retailer in Hackney or a wholesaler in Park Royal who needs to take payment this quarter.
A 6–15 page marketing site with a blog updated weekly does not need a database CMS. Includes, markdown or PHP pages, and a form endpoint will outrun a typical WordPress install and cost less to keep alive. That is the stack behind this website, and it is how we keep Lighthouse scores honest on development jobs.

| Editor skill | Low–medium | Medium | Medium |
| Performance default | Excellent | Variable | Good if apps are few |
| Ongoing cost | Hosting only | Host + care | SaaS + apps |
Still unsure? Send the brief via contact. We will recommend a stack even if it makes the project smaller. Pair the choice with the e-commerce checklist if you sell online.
